Dar es Salaam Goat Races to take part on 1st June 2013

Posted on 08:28 by Unknown
Dar Charity Goat Races Needs Your Support

‘Just One Goat Can Make A Difference’

The Dar Charity Goat Races is appealing for public support for its chosen organisations and charities this year.

So far nine organisations have been chosen to benefit from the money raised by the 2013 Goat Races, including a mobile health clinic, a minibus for disabled children, computers for orphans and training for disabled women to learn how to make top-end jewellery.

Goat Race organisers hope to be able to support even more local organisations and charities. But they warn this will depend on how many people attend the event on June 1, and the amount of money raised on the day.

Organising Committee Chair Karen Stanley said: “The funding the goat races provides can be crucial to the survival of small organisations who otherwise struggle to find enough money for key projects.

“Last year we raised a record 115m TZS thanks to the record 4,200 people who came through the gates. This was enough to be able to extend our support to 15 organisations.

“We hope to do even better this year and raise enough to provide vital funding to even more deserving organisations, but it all now depends on how many people come out to support us on the day.”

Since it was first launched in 2001, the annual family fun day has raised more than 660m Tanzanian Shillings for more than 60 small Tanzanian charities and organisations.

This year’s goat races will also help to provide specialist equipment for children born with cerebral palsy, water pumps and water storage for orphans and women living in poverty and an HIV/Aids programme for youths. (See below for a list of the charities’ names.)

Mrs Stanley said: “Every year we try to ensure that the collective fundraising opportunity the Goat Races represents is shared among as many deserving local causes as possible.

“While the charities are our focus, it would be impossible without the dedicated support of our race sponsors Southern Sun, Coca-Cola, Tanzanian Breweries Limited, Mantra Tanzania, Erolink, FNB and Symbion. Our thanks must also go to SWISS for providing two business class tickets for our raffles.

“This year we have more than 50 sponsors providing valuable services and financial support. It is their support to us that makes it possible to put on this fabulous fun day, but everyone who is thinking about coming along to the goat races should remember that even the simple act of buying the entrance ticket will help people in Tanzania who really need a better chance.”

The Goat Races will take place on June 1 at The Green on Kenyatta Drive, from 12pm to 5.30pm. Tickets cost 5,000 Tanzanian Shillings for all ages and will be on sale at the gate. For more information see our website www.goatraces.com

  1. How the Goat Races Work:

There are seven races. Each race is sponsored by a Race Owner. This year’s race’s are:

The Marvelous Mantra Mile

The Southern Sun Fillies Frolic

The Symbion Sweepstakes

The Kilitime Stakes

The Erolink Racy Recruits

The FNB Champions Cup

The Coca-Cola Open Happiness Sweepstakes

Goat owners pay to race a goat (for the day only) in one of the races. If their goat wins, they stand to win a substantial cash prize. Many people team up with friends or colleagues to become joint goat owners.

Race owners and goat owners get special entry to the highly coveted private Members’ Enclosure where they get to cheer on the goats in comfort, with free food and drink laid on thanks to the sponsorship of Southern Sun Hotel, Tanzania Breweries Ltd, Tanzania Distilleries Ltd and Coca-cola.

This year there is also a special raffle prize for those in the Members’ Enclosure, donated by SWISS, of a return ticket to anywhere in the world!

  1. The Goat Races first began in Dar es Salaam in 2001 thanks to founder Paul Joynson-Hicks. He brought the idea from Uganda where some members of the business community had come up with this novel way of raising money for charity. The Goat Races was modeled (vaguely) on the UK Royal Ascot horse races, except with a rather more practical beast for East Africa - the goat. The basic idea is a fun day out for all the family, at the same time as raising money for some very good causes.
