Call for Applications for Journalism Training in South Africa
The South African Institute for International Affairs (SAIIA), the leading foreign policy research institute on the African continent, the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ), Africa’s premier provider of residency programmes for African journalists, the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria (CHR), the key advocacy organisation for human rights in Africa, and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the German umbrella foreign aid organisation, invite mid-career journalists to apply for an eight-day training course on:
Global Economic Governance: African Perspectives
To be held at the IAJ campus in Johannesburg from December 3 – 10, 2012, the programme addresses mid-career journalists from newspapers, news agencies, online media and radio stations based in African countries. The course will be conducted in English – so competence in spoken and written English is essential.
The course aims at promoting understanding of South Africa’s advocacy of African continental interests in the G20 and BRICS – and the impact of IMF/World Bank policies on African countries, thereby enhancing the quality of trade journalism at media houses across Africa. Only 15 carefully-selected participants will be admitted. They should have at least 5 years of professional experience on the job.
In order to apply, applicants are requested to complete the information sheet (to be downloaded from the website: www.iaj.org.za) and submit it to the address listed below together with the following documents:
· a motivation letter, explaining what the applicant and their respective media houses hope to get out of the programme and how s/he will apply the skills learned;
· a detailed CV with clear contact details; and
· a letter of support from the applicant’s employer (or professional association, in the case of freelancers), with clear contact details, committing the applicant to participate for the full duration of the course.
The international travel costs to and from the training venue will be borne by the GIZ in the event that the media houses are not able to cover the costs. In addition, accommodation costs as well as daily allowances to cover meals will be borne by the organisers.
